’Tis the Season for Holiday Travel Tips

Sometimes referred to as the season of giving, this time of year is also a season of travel. In fact, during Thanksgiving week, more people traveled than they have since 2007, according to AAA and Airlines for America. And travel in December is revving up. Today’s On the Fly features 2016–2017 holiday travel tips to keep you comfortable and cheery en route to your seasonal vacation.

To Wrap or Not to Wrap?

If you’re traveling with gifts, you may want to think twice about wrapping them before you fly. According to the TSA, wrapped gifts are permitted but not encouraged. That’s because if something needs to be inspected, a TSA officer will have to unwrap it. Though the administration’s officers will try not to mess and mangle your presents’ wrapping, they can’t guarantee it.

Where to Find Open Lanes?

This November the TSA also announced a new tool for travelers. The TSA Pre✓ lane schedule tool allows travelers to enter their travel information—airport, day of travel and time—and the tool will show travelers the availability of TSA Pre✓ Lanes.

Where to Grab a Snack Near Your Gate?

If you have a layover, you can pack a snack to tide you over. If you forget, or if you have a tight connection and your stomach is growling, determine a quick grab nearby before you even exit your plane by downloading GateGuru. Check the app’s Amenity List View, which provides a list of restaurants and shops near your gate and for other “day-of travel solutions” by connecting relevant parts of your day with the travel itinerary you entered.

How to Prep for a Long Drive?

AAA recommends checking your car’s battery and tires as well as packing an emergency kit and flashlight before hitting the road for the holidays. Additionally, apps like Waze and GasBuddy will help you with traffic and locating the cheapest nearby fueling options, respectively.
