Discover Fast Tracks, Supersonic Flights and International Trails

Curious about what’s going on in the air or on the trails and tracks? Get up to speed with Club Traveler’s On the Fly and learn about three exciting industry developments.

Take a Big Apple-to-Canada Hike One Day

Strap on your hiking boots! A trail from New York City to Canada is in the works. The proposed Empire State Trail would stretch 750 miles from Manhattan through the Adirondack Mountains to the Canadian border. Slated for completion in 2020, 350 miles of new trail would connect the existing Hudson River Valley Greenway and the Erie Canalway (featured above) to form the Empire State Trail.

Return of Supersonic Flight

Remember the Concorde, the supersonic jet that could fly between New York and London in less than four hours? No, it isn’t coming back, but the next generation of supersonic flight is underway. NASA and Lockheed Martin are teaming up to explore building a quieter, more efficient supersonic X-plane in order to open up these fast flights to the public again. Lockheed will start by building a half-scale plane. Meanwhile, Richard Branson, Virgin Group founder, and Denver startup Boom are also building a supersonic commercial aircraft prototype, which they hope will fill the need for speed left void after the Concorde’s retirement.

Talk About a Super-Fast Track

The dream of a 15-minute, 300 mph commuter train ride between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.—using Japan’s “maglev” train technology—has inched forward. Talks began back in 2014, and Maryland is now embarking on environmental and feasibility studies. With no wheels, magnetic levitation trains are thrusted through electromagnetic pull, which eliminates friction and increases speed.
